  1. "HOUSTON, THIS IS DISCOVERY, WE STILL HAVE THE
  2. ALIEN SPACECRAFT UNDER OBSERVANCE."

  4. On the 13th March, 1989 the Space Shuttle 'Discovery' was launched. 20
  5. hours and 45 minutes into the mission at 0642hrs Eastern Standard
  6. Time, the above message was heard from a Discovery crew member.

  8. The message was recorded by Donald Ratsch in Baltimore, Maryland, USA.
  9. He is a member of the Goddard Amateur Radio Club, which monitors all
  10. NASA space flights.

  12. Before this amazing message an amateur radio enthusiast in Ohio 
  13. states that the crew of the Shuttle told Houston Mission Control that
  14. there was something wrong, "We have a fire". It is thought that this
  15. was a codeword for UFO and would alert Nasa that the Shuttle had a
  16. problem.

  18. Straight after the transmission it is alledged by another radio 
  19. enthusiast Mr Oechsler that NASA instructed the crew to switch 
  20. frequencies to a secure mode.

  22. The incident was reported by the media and the tape played on LBC
  23. (London Broadcasting Company) from where the attached wav file was
  24. obtained.

  26. For some time Nasa denied that the actual message was transmittted
  27. from a Shuttle mission. However Nasa spokesman James Hatfield has now
  28. stated that the tape is genuine but the incident was a hoax.

  30. The attached Wav file which is in a zipped uuencoded format lasts for
  31. 37 seconds. The female voice at the start is a presenter from LBC who
  32. relates what the Discovery message says. You will then hear the
  33. message repeated 4 times. Of course the original message was only
  34. spoken once but to help you hear it clearly I have repeated it 4
  35. times.
